The History of Count Zosimus 1814

Received
One volume in a half leather binding and marbled paper.26cm x 16cm x 3cm. The book was received in the middle of a previous repair, and is in poor condition.

The front board is detached, and efforts have been made to begin joint tacketing. Thread has been strung through the shoulders at the kettle stitches, and corresponding holes in the board have been made for threading. The back board was also detached, but has since been laced on by four joint tackets. The spine has been lined with an extended Japanese tissue, extending 5cm on either side. The front and back leather has been lifted in preparation for repair. The leather suffers from red rot. The marbled paper is flaking from the board edges, and some leather on the corners have been worn away. The spine piece was faced with a solvent-set tissue, and lifted from the spine intact and in fair condition. The head and tail caps are missing. Mild surface dirt overall.

The text block is of a medium (1) weight paper, cream (2) in color, and slightly textured (1) [Print Council of America 1996]. The pages are untrimmed, and extremely irregular in size. The head, tail, and foredge is soiled. The foredge suffers from paper loss. Pages 229-240 remain uncut at the head.

Plain, double-folio end-sheets were sewn on. The paper is also a medium (1) weight, cream (2) in color, and slightly textured (1) [Print Council of America 1996]. Two library stickers are affixed to the front pastedown, and the text of one has transferred onto the consequent fly leaf. The front and back paste-downs have been lifted in preparation for repair.

The book is sewn on six sunken sewing stations, appears to be sewn two-on, and is intact.

The book has been rounded and backed.

Treatment
Spot test leather with red rot cocktail, and Klucel G in ethanol.

Paper was surfaced cleaned with latex sponges, as necessary.

A hollow tube, 1-on 2-off made of Dove`s Grey was applied with PVA to the spine.

Consolidated the leather with red rot cocktail. Laced the front board on with 18/3 thread by joint tacketing. Extended tissue linings were put down under the pastedowns with PVA. 1901 Japanese tissue was toned with acrylics and used to reback the binding; tissue was put down under lifted leather with PVA, and leather was put down on top of that with PVA. Original spine was lined with a lightweight kozo, the facing was removed with ethanol, and the spine was put back in place with PVA. Exposed toned tissue was treated with SC6000, and polished.
